 ObjectMaker for X-Plane

Welcome to the ObjectMaker home page. ObjectMaker is a fully interactive 3D CAD Editor. It's primary use is to create scenery objects for Laminar Research's "X-Plane" flight simulator. ObjectMaker is free for any non-commercial use. Please read the enclosed documentation for license restrictions.

15-MAY-2003: ObjectMaker Development Halted
After over three years of development I have decided to halt work on ObjectMaker. This is for a variety of reasons:

  • Missing co-operation from X-Plane's author
ObjectMaker is the only tool available to interactively construct objects for X-Plane, and more than three thirds of all avcailable objects have been created with it. Still, X-Plane's author chooses to ignore the importance of co-operating on the object data format. The object format has changed repeatedly without a note from the author. I usually find out about object format changes through bug-reports from users.

  • No clear path of evolution
X-Plane's object format appears to be an ill-conceived organic hodge-podge of specifications. It does not look to be engineered, nor does it contain any semblance of advance planning. New features are added as needed, without regard for compatibility or logic. As it's parent product, X-Plane, there is no discernible path of evolution, or direction into which it is moving. It is, therefore, impossible to anticipate changes or include important capabilities into the design of ObjectMaker. All new features have to be added after-the-fact, and at great cost to me.

  • Lack of time
Developing ObjectMaker takes a lot of my free time. I simply do not have the time to play catch-up to an ill-conceived data format without knowing where we are going. There are better ways to spend my time.

What does this mean?

  • ObjectMaker will still work, and you may still download and use it.
  • Over time, ObjectMaker will become obsolete. Start looking for a replacement now.
  • I will not release the source. Please do not ask.
  • Theoretically, there may be further releases. I may resume work on ObjectMaker in the future. But don't hold your breath. New object features may or may not be supported.

25-MAR-2003:
New 68k release for better compatibility with emulators. If you are using an emulator like "Executor" by Ardi, this version will work. It will disable all QuickTime calls that Executor cannot emulate.

03-MAR-2003:
New ObjectMaker release 6.60. New features:

  • Textured Preview!
  • Multiple independent 3D views
  • Alignment Manager
  • Create Special Composites
    • Hollow Arch
    • Parametric Surface
  • Bug fixes
